Cloud Empress License Terms

Anyone may publish free or commercial material based upon and/or declaring compatibility/set in the world of Cloud without express written permission from the publisher, worlds by watt, as long as they adhere to the following terms:

  • If your product declares compatibility with Cloud Empress you must state the following in your legal text and on any websites from which a commercial product is sold: “[product name] is an independent production by [publisher name] and is not affiliated with worlds by watt.”
  • Worlds by watt takes no responsibility for any legal claims against your product. 
  • The mechanics and concepts of Cloud Empress may be reused freely. 
  • The text of Cloud Empress may not be used verbatim.
  • Worlds by watt and all artists maintain copyright of their work.

Cloud Empress Creators Grant

The Cloud Empress Creators Grant is currently closed. Look out for future Cloud Empress crowdfunding campaigns for any upcoming Creators Grant opportunities.

Cloud Empress is an ecological science fantasy RPG about traveling through a world ruled by giant magical cicadas.

We set aside resources to support small creators enriching and expanding the world of Cloud Empress. With the Cloud Empress Creators Grant, we give money to help bring your idea Cloud Empress related project ideas to fruition.

How To Apply

  1. Draft an idea for a project related to Cloud Empress.
  2. Fill out the Cloud Empress Creators Grant application, checking to make sure it fits with our Values Statement (see below).
  3. We’ll review your application and we’ll send you an email if you are selected, and at what funding level. (If you are not accepted, we will notify you too).
  4. You reply to that email within 2 weeks with a signed a contract that covers the project, and a method for us to pay you.
  5. You start creating your work!

Grant Benefits

  • Funding, up to $500 USD. This money is legally freelance pay, and is subject to any local taxes and ordinances. You will be responsible for ensuring you adhere to local tax laws.
  • Permission to call yourself a “Cloud Empress Creator’s Grant Recipient.”
  • A link to your project on the Cloud Empress website as well as promotion on world’s by watt social media channels.
  • Optional feedback from watt on your work-in-progress project materials.

Limitations

  • This grant is limited to creators 18 years of age or older. 
  • We reserve the right to reject any applicant for any reason without any further explanation.
  • We reserve the right to terminate the grant at any time, for any reason. Upon termination, you will still receive grant funding, however you will lose access to all other benefits of the grant.

Creator Grant FAQs

What happens if you have to abandon, pause, or are otherwise unable to complete the project?

You are not expected to return the grant funds, and the grant will not be revoked based on project completeness. Getting your game out to people after funding is sent is up to you.

What’s the deal with copyright?

We still own the copyright to Cloud Empress, but you have exclusive ownership of your own creation.

Why does it have to be connected to Cloud Empress?

This grant is funded by the Cloud Empress Kickstarter, and exists as a way to fund creators so they can expand and explore the world of Cloud Empress.

What sort of costs can be covered by the grant?

Each project is unique, but here a few ways you might spend money on an your project:

  • Hiring an artist
  • Hiring editors, sensitivity readers, cultural consultants, etc.
  • Purchasing publishing tools, like the Affinity Suite
  • Marketing
  • Printing or production costs
  • Compensating your own work and time

How do you choose which applications to accept?

There are no specific guidelines used to judge which applications are selected. Applications from marginalized creators and/or less-established creators are especially encouraged. Originality, creativity, and heart are just as important as a polished end-product.

What can I do with my project once it’s done? Can I charge money for it?

Yes! You can charge money for what you create. What you create is yours to share. Publish it on Itch.io, DrivethruRPG, or print a zine.

Where did the idea for a Cloud Empress Creator‘s grant come from?

The Cloud Empress Creator’s Grant was inspired by (and heavy structured like) Possum Creek Games Hæth Grant.
